Parent contributions to school operations are essential and their involvement can have wide-reaching community impact. At the annual celebrations for students at Breiðholtsskóli and Ölduselsskóli held this month, parents were active participants, and were followed by a Parent Patrol. Parent participation in these activities provides opportunities to get to know each other, connect and support one another in their parenting roles.
Parents waited tables
Staff at Breiðholtsskóli, the Bakki youth center, teens and parents all agreed that the annual celebration was an outstanding success. "The school's annual celebration committee handled everything related to planning, food, decorations and energizing the event, and they and the staff who helped deserve huge credit," says Sunna Vilhjálmsdóttir, assistant director at Bakki.
ClubDub and DJ Sóley performed and created an amazing atmosphere. "The entire event went smoothly and parents from the upper primary school came and helped serve the meal and also with cleanup after the meal, which was invaluable help and wonderful to see that parents want to take an active part in their children's lives," says Sunna.
About 50 parents participated in the Parent Patrol
At Ölduselsskóli the atmosphere was equally positive when the school's annual celebration was held. School staff and Hólmasel staff, students and parents agreed that this was an excellent event in every way. Students arrived dressed up and looking their best, ready to enjoy a wonderful evening together. A three-course meal prepared by the school's chef was served and about 15 parents served students and school staff. The student council handled decorations and the gymnasium has probably never looked so good. The highlight of the evening was when musician Emmsje Gauti took the stage to enthusiastic cheers from students.
It was gratifying to see about 50 parents attend the Parent Patrol after the dance ended, which shows strong cooperation between parents and the school. We can truly be proud to belong to the Ölduselsskóli community.
