Standardized preschool hours in Reykjavík take effect this fall

Starting Sept. 1, all city-run preschools will operate from 7:30am to 4:30pm. This follows changes to the Rules on Preschool Services approved by the City Executive Council on June 5.

Service underused

Until now, five preschools in the city have offered extended hours until 5pm for parents who need them. However, use of this service has been extremely low, with only one child using it this spring. Given this trend and staffing challenges at preschools, City officials consider the change both practical and necessary.

Representatives of preschool directors and staff on the School & Recreation Council welcome the change and have noted that it has been difficult to maintain operations until 5pm. The parent representative on the council did not object to the change, given the low usage and considerable cost of the service.

More information about the change can be found in the City Executive Council meeting minutes under item 18.
