Reykjavík City's spring cleaning began in March, focusing first on major walking and cycling paths. The cleaning is well underway and crews have now moved on to residential streets. Street sweeping began last week and washing operations are about to start. The day before residential streets are washed, Reykjavík City sends text messages to notify residents about the washing so they can move their vehicles.
Important to move cars
It's essential that cars are moved off the street during washing operations. Moving vehicles significantly speeds up the process and results in better cleaning when cars aren't parked again until the cleaning is completely finished. This applies only to public parking spaces on streets and city land, not parking areas within property lines of residential buildings and businesses.
Text messages sent the day before street washing
Text messages are sent to residents the day before to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible, and traditional signs will also be posted to inform both residents and city visitors about the street washing. Reykjavík City has been sending messages to residents for the past three years with good results. We hope residents will continue to respond positively to these messages and assist with the cleaning efforts by moving their cars, which leads to cleaner and more attractive streets.
This time, work will begin in Grafarholt, Úlfarsárdalur and Kjalarnes.
Please note that the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration handles operation and cleaning of highways in urban areas. Examples of highways in the city include Kringlumýrarbraut, Miklabraut, Hringbraut, Vesturlandsvegur and Reykjanesbraut.
