Route options for Sundabraut open for public comment
The environmental impact report for Sundabraut and the draft master plan amendment are now available for public review in the Urban Planning Portal. Three public information meetings will be held in Reykjavík for residents. The deadline to submit official statements or comments is Nov. 30.
We emphasize that these are draft proposals now undergoing preliminary review, before the formal municipal plan amendment is finalized and publicly announced. The final decision on the Sundabraut route and design within the municipal plan will be based on the environmental assessment's findings, public feedback from the upcoming comment period, and further agreement between the city and the state.
Two main options: a tunnel or a bridge
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, in cooperation with Reykjavík City, plans to build the Sundabraut roadway between Sæbraut and Kjalarnes. The main goal of the project is to improve transportation for all modes of transportation in the area, reduce travel distances, and enhance connections between local districts.
In its environmental assessment report, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration presents two main options for the Kleppsvík crossing between Sæbraut at Sundahöfn and Gufunes: a tunnel or a 30 meter (98 foot) high bridge. Both options follow the same route from Gufunes through Geldinganes, Gunnunes, and Álfsnes to Kjalarnes. The route will cross Eiðsvík, Leiruvogur, and Kollafjörður using causeways and bridges. According to the agency's environmental assessment report, construction is expected to begin in 2027 and be completed by 2031.
The environmental report was prepared in consultation with Reykjavík City. A separate environmental assessment for the municipal plan amendment, prepared by VSÓ ráðgjöf, has also been submitted.
