Reykjavík Pride Parade: a joyful celebration in glorious weather
Large crowds gathered in Reykjavík's city center to participate in and watch the Reykjavík Pride Parade that took place today. An estimated 80,000 or more people joined the celebration at its peak.
The Reykjavík Pride Parade is the highlight of Reykjavík Pride. The parade brings together lesbians, gay men, bisexual and pansexual people, transgender people, intersex people and other LGBT+ individuals along with their families and friends to affirm their existence and highlight their causes.
The parade started promptly today at 2pm from Hallgrímskirkja and proceeded along Skólavörðustígur, Bankastræti, Lækjargata and Fríkirkjuvegur.
The City Council participated, as in previous years, with Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir leading the way.
A Reykjavík City vehicle, decorated with balloons forming a rainbow in the appropriate colors, led the procession. Thundering music played while the mayor and city councilors distributed roses to the cheers of the crowd and held banners reading "Reykjavík: A City for All of Us."
The parade ended at Hljómskálagarður park where outdoor concerts took place, featuring a variety of musical acts.
Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir said the Reykjavík Pride Parade absolutely lived up to its name. "Reykjavík wants to be a city where everyone can live safely and freely, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. This year's Reykjavík Pride Parade was a mix of everything - fighting for a just society, celebrating diversity, and the gorgeous weather and amazing atmosphere made it even better!"
