Reykjavík has partnered with the Finnish city of Jakobstad in a European climate innovation initiative. This partnership stems from Reykjavík's designation as a Pilot City, which recognizes cities that lead the way in accelerating carbon neutrality through innovative climate projects. As Reykjavík's Twin City partner, Jakobstad will share transportation-focused climate initiatives, with both cities learning from each other's experiences.
Reykjavík City has secured Pilot City funding, which was awarded to select participants in the European initiative of 112 carbon-neutral and smart cities. The funding supports the cities' efforts to accelerate their progress toward carbon neutrality by 2030. The European Union organization NetZeroCities provides dedicated support for this initiative. While this specific project ends in August 2026, broader collaboration among European cities will continue.
