Reykjavík Marathon finish line move takes effect in 2026
Reykjavík Sports Association has asked Reykjavík City to delay the change of the Reykjavík Marathon finish line from Lækjargata to Geirsgata until August next year.
The City Executive Council approved working group recommendations at its December meeting last year to review Culture Night and Reykjavík Marathon planning, including changes to Reykjavík Marathon running routes and the Culture Night 2025 program.
The primary goal of moving the marathon finish line was to ensure pedestrian safety in the area after the race ends through increased monitoring and improved barriers. Reykjavík Sports Association says the change is extensive, work has already begun, but it won't be possible to complete it until next year.
The City Executive Council has approved Reykjavík Sports Association's request, so the finish line will stay on Lækjargata this year as in previous years but will move to Geirsgata in 2026.
Other changes the working group recommended, such as moving the entertainment stage from Þingholt to Old Vesturbær and ending the evening program at 10pmi instead of 11pm, will still take effect this year.
