Winter cycling is off to a good start this year with significant year-over-year increases in bicycle traffic during both January and February. In the capital area, the increase was 6.2% in January and 21.7% in February compared to last year.

The increase varied by location, but looking at February specifically, there was an increase of just over 11% in Nauthólsvík, 32% on Ægisíða and 68% on Þvottalaugavegur in Laugardalur. There are 29 bicycle counting stations throughout the capital area, all monitored by Reykjavík City.

Many cyclists are clearly well-prepared for winter riding, though warm clothing has been necessary due to the rough weather conditions similar to last year, including several days of severe weather, yellow weather alerts and even a red alert.
