New majority in City Council
Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, leader of the Social Democratic Alliance, was elected mayor at a special City Council session today, where appointments were also made to key councils and committees. The new governing coalition comprised of the Social Democratic Alliance, Pirate Party, Socialist Party, Left-Green Movement, and People's Party also unveiled their cooperation agreement today.
Distribution of leadership roles
During the extraordinary session, the following leadership appointments were made for the majority coalition:
Mayor: Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, leader of the Social Democratic Alliance.
Chair of City Executive Council: Líf Magneudóttir, leader of the Left-Green Movement.
President of City Council and chair of Welfare Council: Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, leader of the Socialist Party.
Chair of Environment and Planning Council: Dóra Björt Guðjónsdóttir, leader of the Pirate Party.
Chair of School and Recreation Council: Helga Þórðardóttir, leader of the People's Party.

Human Rights & Democracy Council: Sabine Leskopf, Social Democratic Alliance.
Culture, Sports, and Leisure Council: Skúli Helgason, Social Democratic Alliance.
Digital Council: Alexandra Briem, Pirate Party.
Procurement & Executive Council: Andrea Helgadóttir, Socialist Party.
Public Security Committee: Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, Social Democratic Alliance, and Líf Magneudóttir, Left-Green Movement.
Coalition agreement announced
Earlier today, the five coalition leaders presented their collaboration agreement on improving quality of life in Reykjavík.
The meeting addressed two proposals from the new majority: restructuring the Human Rights and Violence Prevention Council, and dissolving the current residents' councils while postponing elections for their replacements.
Following the City Council meeting, a ceremonial key handover will take place at the mayor's office, where outgoing mayor Einar Þorsteinsson will present the office keys to newly elected mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir.
