Reykjavík City's Environment & Planning Council presented a proposal this week for a new bus pick-up and drop-off point at Old Hringbraut to replace the current bus terminal at Hallgrímskirkja.

The proposal is based on analysis and consultation with stakeholders, including tourism operators, residents' associations and nearby institutions.

The new location aims to reduce bus traffic in residential neighborhoods, improve pedestrian safety and provide more sustainable tourism access to the city center.

Studies show that the new location at Old Hringbraut offers similar advantages to the current location in terms of walking distance from lodging establishments, averaging about five minutes on foot. Traffic counts showed that the current location at Hallgrímskirkja receives up to seven buses in 15 minutes during busy mornings, creating strain in the neighborhood, particularly near preschools and primary schools.

The new pick-up and drop-off point will have access from Vatnsmýrarvegur, above BSÍ. The location will be reserved exclusively for tour buses. Walking paths will be clearly marked and the area will include a waiting area with benches and possible shelter.

Development preparations are underway and construction is expected to begin later this summer. The pick-up and drop-off point at Hallgrímskirkja will remain in use until the new location opens.
