Multicultural Policy enters public consultation
The draft policy for the Intercultural City of Reykjavík 2026-2030 is now available on Reykjavík City's Consultation Portal, where anyone can submit comments. This is the first policy of its kind to define Reykjavík City as an Intercultural City.
A steering group for policy on the Intercultural City of Reykjavík was established last February. The group was tasked with developing a comprehensive policy addressing the needs of immigrants, refugees, and applicants for international protection. The focus was to be on inclusion, equality, and active participation for all residents of the city.
The steering group's goal was to ensure that multicultural values were reflected in all of the city's policies and services, and that the contributions of immigrants would be more highly valued. The steering group was tasked with reviewing the approach to this entire policy area and creating a clear vision for the Intercultural City of Reykjavík.
The group also examined other existing city policies and conducted an initial diagnosis of how they relate to this policy area in the context of each department's operations and responsibilities. The policy development was presented to councils and committees, particularly the Human Rights Council, which serves as a multicultural council. The council held an open meeting with parents of foreign origin to specifically request suggestions that could inform this policy-making process.
A guiding principle for Reykjavík City operations
The policy serves as a guiding principle for all city operations, and its priorities are incorporated into Reykjavík's activities and overall policy. This work is based on the best available knowledge and experience. The action plan ensures that all city departments review how their operations as an employer, service provider, and partner affect this group of residents.
The City Executive Council referred the draft multicultural policy to the City Council, which discussed the matter at its meeting this week and unanimously approved sending the draft to the Consultation Portal.
Open consultation
Reykjavík City's Consultation Portal is used to gather ideas and input from residents on various city projects. On the portal, residents can share their opinions on numerous policy and implementation projects currently underway. Residents and interest groups are encouraged to participate in the consultation and provide official statements. The Consultation Portal will remain open until Dec. 9.
