Mayor opens the Elliðaár rivers

Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir cast for salmon in the Elliðaár rivers during this morning's opening ceremony.

Anglers gathered at the fishing lodge in Elliðaárdalur, where Ragnheiður Thorsteinsson, chair of the Angling Association, formally declared the rivers open. A light breakfast followed the ceremony.

The rivers are now open for fishing for the 86th time, and mayors have opened the Elliðaár rivers every year since 1960. The salmon have already entered the rivers, so anglers can expect lively action along the riverbanks.

Ragnheiður invited Mayor Heiða to fish at Breiðan, and they later moved to Hundasteinar. A considerable number of people gathered to watch the fishing. At noon, the mayor caught a magnificent salmon at Hundasteinar.
