Markús Þór Andrésson has taken over as director of Reykjavík Art Museum from Ólöf Kristín Sigurðardóttir, who held the position for the past 10 years.

The formal handover took place yesterday, Sept. 1, when Markús ceremonially received the museum keys from Ólöf at Hafnarhús Museum.

"It's a great honor to have the opportunity to lead Reykjavík Art Museum into a new era. The museum has grown tremendously in recent years, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen its position as a vibrant platform for contemporary art," Markús says.

Ólöf Kristín says she's proud of her achievements during her 10 years in the role: "It has been an honor to serve in this role and rewarding to meet all the amazing artists who have worked with us to strengthen Reykjavík's position as a dynamic cultural hub and establish our museums as go-to destinations for residents and visitors alike. "

Markús has worked as head of exhibitions and outreach at the museum since 2017, as an independent curator for numerous museums and galleries, and has worked on exhibits both domestically and internationally. His contract runs for five years, with the option to extend for an additional five years.
