Major transportation improvements in the capital area starting today
Strætó Public Transport is significantly expanding its services starting today, Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025. This change marks an important step toward better and more accessible public transportation in the capital area. The share of residents living within 400 meters of a bus stop with 10-minute frequency during off-peak hours jumps from about 18% to more than 50%.
The goal of these changes is to improve residents' access to frequent transportation and boost public transit ridership.
The service expansion is part of the Transportation Charter and Strætó Public Transport's operational plan, while also preparing for the New Route Network launching in 2031. Now that the changes are taking effect, riders should become familiar with the improvements.
We're making major service improvements
- Enhanced services in all capital area municipalities.
- Extended evening service hours.
- Shorter travel times from Kópavogur and Breiðholt with new priority lanes.
- Extended service hours in Kjalarnes and greatly increased frequency.
The route planner has been updated, so riders can find the best route using "Plan your trip" on the Strætó Public Transport website and app.
Encouraging environmentally friendly and cost-effective transportation choices
“I warmly welcome this important milestone in the city's public transportation,” says Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir. “Increased service and frequency on Strætó Public Transport represent a major step toward better and more accessible public transportation for all residents. These improvements benefit not only those who already rely on city buses in their daily lives, but also encourage more people to choose an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to travel.
By strengthening public transportation, we're building the foundation for a sustainable city, reducing traffic and household costs, improving air quality and making Reykjavík an even better and greener city for the future.“
See you on Strætó!
