Yesterday, Litli Jörfi celebrated the opening of its new building at Bústaðavegur 81, the former location of the Garðaborg preschool.

The building has undergone a complete renovation and has been repurposed to house the infant units for Jörfi preschool. The atmosphere was joyful at the opening ceremony, where Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir spoke with staff and toured the renovated building.

The renovations ran from winter 2023 to spring 2025 and included both indoor and outdoor work. The building was partially torn down and rebuilt with new interior walls, fixtures, ventilation, and technical systems. On the exterior, the insulation, siding, windows, and roof were replaced. The work met Nordic Swan Ecolabel requirements, which ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

New opportunities for Jörfi preschool

With the new facility, two infant units are being added to Jörfi, expanding the preschool to seven divisions with a total of 122 children. The older divisions for 3- to 5-year-old children will remain at Hæðargarður 27a, while Litli Jörfi houses the infant units for 1- to 3-year-old children.

The preschool operates under a new educational approach in the spirit of Reggio Emilia. The main focus is on respecting children's perspectives, encouraging them to be creative, and fostering a love of inquiry through play and interaction.

Jörfi preschool first opened in 1997. The opening of Litli Jörfi is an important step toward meeting the growing needs of residents in the neighborhood and ensuring the area's youngest children have quality facilities in a safe and creative setting.
