Major maintenance work has been going on at Vesturbæjarlaug lately. It turns out the pool needs more masonry repairs than expected, which has pushed back the reopening to July 15.

The closure was originally scheduled for a set period, but with older structures, unexpected problems often surface and delay progress.

The pool basin, built in 1961, turned out to be in worse shape than early inspections indicated. As a result, more masonry work was needed than expected, pushing the reopening back to July 15.

For over 50 years, the basin has been repainted every 3–4 years, building up layer after layer of paint. A temporary shelter was built over the pool so crews could repair it and strip away the old paint—completely removing it to ensure long-lasting masonry work.

While work on the pool basin continues, the team is making good use of the closure to upgrade other areas of the facility, including the reception and saunas, and to install a new emergency system. The aim is to finish as many upgrades as possible during this phase to minimize future disruptions.

Anna Kristín Sigurðardóttir, director of Vesturbæjarlaug, says they’re doing everything possible to finish the repair as soon as possible. “We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. We’re excited to welcome guests back on July 15 to a renewed and improved Vesturbæjarlaug—our shared treasure,” says Anna Kristín.
