Important to consider earthquake prevention measures

Pressure has been building recently in the Brennisteinsfjöll mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula, south of the capital area. Pressure in the earth's crust can cause major earthquakes, so it's important to think about protection and preparedness for possible earthquakes.

Monday's earthquake in Brennisteinsfjöll was the largest in the area in seven years. Major earthquakes happen about every 50 years in this region, and scientists expect that pressure in the earth's crust could eventually produce earthquakes up to magnitude 6.4.

Experts at the Icelandic Meteorological Office and other agencies are closely watching the situation, but we can all prepare for a possible major earthquake by planning earthquake protection measures. Prevention measures are crucial and include securing furniture and loose items to walls in homes and workplaces to reduce the risk of accidents and damage. It's also smart to prevent cabinets or objects from falling onto beds and to keep a power bank or charging device in your car so you can charge your phone if power goes out for an extended time, just to name a few steps.

We encourage everyone to learn about earthquake protection and preparedness measures and take appropriate steps where needed.
