Imagine Peace Tower lighting event in Viðey canceled

Imagine Peace Tower in Viðey

The lighting ceremony for the Imagine Peace Tower in Viðey on Thursday, Oct. 9, has been canceled due to hazardous sea conditions in Faxaflói Bay.

Traditionally, a peaceful ceremony marks the lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower to honor the memory of musician John Lennon. The Imagine Peace Tower is the brainchild of artist, musician, and peace activist Yoko Ono, intended as a beacon for world peace. The Imagine Peace Tower will still be lit at 8 p.m. tonight, on the birthday of her husband John Lennon.

Elding, which operates ferry services to Viðey, says conditions are too dangerous for sailing across the strait and has canceled all ferry trips today. Although the weather may look fine, safety must always come first, and the decision was made in consultation with event organizers and emergency responders.

Although the event is canceled, the public is invited to watch the lighting via the live stream on the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER website at 8 p.m., play Lennon's song "Imagine," and think about peace.
