Hilmar Ingi Jónsson appointed as new data protection officer

Reykjavík City has hired Hilmar Ingi Jónsson as its new data protection officer.

He graduated with a BSc in Business Law from Bifröst University and holds two master's degrees in law. He completed a master's degree in law from the University of Akureyri and graduated with a master's degree in Information Technology Law from the University of Oslo.

For the past 13 years, Hilmar Ingi has lived and worked in Norway, serving as data protection officer for the municipalities of Årdal, Sogndal, Lærdal, Larvik, and Lilleström and most recently for the Norwegian Customs Service. Hilmar Ingi has extensive experience leading teams of data protection specialists and participating in collaborative work across different fields. He has also conducted training sessions in data protection for municipal managers in Norway and given lectures at various conferences on privacy and IT law. In his work, Hilmar Ingi has participated in major national working groups related to data protection and served on the board of the Norwegian association of data protection officers for large municipalities.

The data protection officer position for Reykjavík City was advertised on May 20. A total of 12 applications were received and Hilmar Ingi was selected through a competitive hiring process. As data protection officer, he will work closely with Reykjavík City's managers and specialists on data protection matters and lead a team focused on data protection and personal data processing within the City. Hilmar Ingi will begin his new role at Reykjavík City in mid-August, operating out of the Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer.
