Hagaskóli students raised 3.6 million for good causes
The charity day Good Cause (Gott mál) was once again a great success when it was held at Hagaskóli for the 13th time this May. Many guests from the neighborhood made their way to the school and enjoyed what students had put extensive work into preparing over the preceding weeks.
Students organized the event from the ground up
The program featured diverse entertainment that students organized, including a concession stand, raffles, face painting, a haunted house, tombola, musical performances, games and even hair styling. The hall also featured a café where guests could settle in and enjoy live music.
Students had organized the entire event from scratch, secured all materials and handled the development with great enthusiasm. Hagaskóli Principal Ómar Örn Magnússon said in a brief address that while the amount raised was important, the main goal of the day was for students to experience how powerful it is to do good and that good deeds can make a real difference in others' lives.
Sassa Eyþórsdóttir, who led the project, echoes Ómar's sentiments and says the purpose is multifaceted but primarily for students to experience firsthand how important it is to do good and how good deeds can change others' lives for the better. Students learn about humanitarian organizations and relief work and explore ways they themselves can create change both in their local community and on a larger scale.
Supporting The Women's Shelter and youth center in Afghanistan
The tradition is for students to choose one domestic cause and one international cause to support through a democratic election by all students after extensive discussions and brainstorming. This year students chose to support The Women's Shelter and facilities for teens in new housing. They also chose the organization AFGA, which among other things operates a youth center in Afghanistan that provides comprehensive assistance to adolescents. They raised a total of 3.6 million krónur, split between the projects.
The day was well attended, and with it Hagaskóli continues to strengthen social responsibility and build students' awareness of the importance of charitable work.
