Garden owners are responsible for their vegetation
As the days get shorter and winter approaches, it is good to remember that property owners are responsible for vegetation along property boundaries. Proper maintenance ensures that vegetation enhances the community while preventing hazards on streets and paths.
Under building regulations, property owners must keep vegetation within their property lines. It states, "The property owner must keep tree or shrub growth within the property boundaries. If not maintained, and where tree or shrub growth extends beyond property lines onto streets, sidewalks, or open areas, the road authority or area manager may remove the part causing disturbance or unsightliness, at the property owner's expense after prior warning. The key rules for vegetation at property lines include:
- Vegetation must not obscure traffic signs or block street lighting
- Pedestrians and cyclists must have clear access along walking paths
- Where street sweepers or snow removal equipment operate, vegetation overhanging paths must have a minimum clearance of 2.80 meters
- On roadways (and where waste collection, fire department or ambulance vehicles travel), vegetation must have a minimum clearance of 4.20 meters
- Tall tree species must be planted at least 3.00 meters from the property lines of neighboring lots.
Reykjavík residents are urged to inspect the trees and shrubs on their property and check for branches or vegetation overhanging sidewalks, street lighting, or traffic signs.
Together, we can ensure public safety and maintain a pleasant urban environment!
