Development that transforms KR sports facilities
Major sports facility construction has begun at the Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (KR) sports complex that will transform the club's facilities.
The Reykjavík City Procurement & Executive Council recently voted to accept the bid from Eykt ehf., which submitted the most cost-effective proposal for KR's new multi-purpose gymnasium, with completion scheduled for fall 2027. Reykjavík City will oversee the construction of the multi-purpose gymnasium with an estimated project cost of about 3.2 billion króna. The multi-purpose gymnasium will span about 6,700 square meters. It will include a sports hall of about 4,400 square meters that most KR divisions can use. The building will include an artificial turf field where teams can practice soccer and compete in eight-a-side matches.
Investment in KR development exceeds four billion króna
The reconstruction of the competition field at Frostaskjól, which has been resurfaced with artificial turf, is well underway and will finish next year. KR has managed the reconstruction of the competition field at Frostaskjól, and the City Executive Council today formalized an agreement to provide a grant of 518 million króna for the construction. In total, over four billion króna will be invested in KR sports facility development over the coming seasons.
Bright times ahead for the club
Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir says she's excited about the development ahead for KR, which will primarily benefit children and young people in the club's various divisions as well as elite athletics, strengthening the entire neighborhood. "I join KR in celebrating this facility development now underway. I sense great energy in the club and am convinced that bright times lie ahead in Vesturbær with this development. This is important for Reykjavík City."
Þórhildur Garðarsdóttir, KR chair, says she's extremely pleased that this development is underway. "I celebrate with the entire KR community this enormous milestone. The multi-purpose gymnasium construction, along with improvements to the main field, will completely transform facilities for our athletes, especially the younger groups. I also want to thank the building committee and Reykjavík City staff for the exemplary cooperation that has made this a reality. Bright times now lie ahead for KR's operations."
