Inga Sæland, minister of social affairs and housing, and Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir have signed a declaration of intent to provide the state with land for a new planned facility, the Protective Measures Center, on Reykjavík City property in the Hólmsheiði area.

The facility will provide services for individuals committed to secure detention by court order under the criminal code. This includes individuals who have completed their sentences but are still considered dangerous to society.

The declaration of intent is a vital step toward securing services for this group and enhancing public safety.

The Protective Measures Center will emphasize a secure environment that promotes rehabilitation for the individuals housed there. The goal is to provide them with appropriate support, training and treatment.

"It takes courage to address these issues, and now action is finally being taken," says Inga Sæland, minister of social affairs and housing. "Uncertainty has surrounded services for individuals committed to secure detention, but now authorities are finally addressing this critical issue. The goal is to provide the new facility's residents with a safe and constructive environment while ensuring public safety."

"With this declaration of intent, we are taking an important step to ensure that secure custody services become a reality. This is something municipalities have been calling for for years," says Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir. "Now we will work closely together on a solution that both strengthens community safety and provides a better environment for rehabilitation. "
