Construction of a new dedicated city bus lane and general traffic lane on Kringlumýrarbraut is progressing well and the project is on schedule. Work to reduce the median and create a new lane for general traffic is in the final stages. Asphalt has been milled from existing lanes and new asphalt is scheduled to be laid Thursday evening.

The next step in construction will be to create a bus bay north of the intersection and install a bus shelter while completing the dedicated city bus lane. After that, surface finishing will begin. The project is scheduled for completion on Aug. 15.

Respect speed limits

Speed through the construction zone has been reduced to 30 km/h while construction is underway. The police have visited the area twice and measured vehicle speeds. In both cases, well over 30% of drivers exceeded the speed limit. Work zone signs, lane restrictions, and temporary speed limit reductions are essential for ensuring worker safety and the smooth progress of the project. Drivers are asked to be patient with temporary restrictions and respect speed limits.

Priority for city buses and new stops

The project involves building a new priority lane for city buses on a 400-meter stretch of Kringlumýrarbraut between Háaleitisbraut and Miklabraut, on the west side of the street heading south, constructing a new lane for general traffic, and reducing and reconstructing the median to create space for the new lane. Fencing on the median will be removed and replaced with guardrails. All lanes on this section will be milled and repaved. Light poles will also need to be removed and relocated.

New bus stops will be built on both sides of Háaleitisbraut. City bus route 4 is planned to change and take a direct route along Kringlumýrarbraut when the priority lane is ready. Travel time for city bus passengers will be reduced by 4-5 minutes without affecting travel time for other vehicles.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, Transport for the Capital Area, Reykjavík City and Strætó Public Transport are working together on this project, which is funded by the Transportation Charter. The contractor is D. Ing-verk.
