Building Commissioner's secondary plans now available digitally

A three-year-plus focused initiative to scan and publish the Building Commissioner's secondary plans has now been completed. The project involved making electrical, structural and plumbing drawings, along with other paper-based secondary plans, accessible online for both the public and professionals.
Approximately 700,000 drawings were scanned and cataloged in total. The scanning and packaging portion of the project was put out for competitive bidding. Gagnavarslan submitted the lowest bid, and their work progressed smoothly.
The scanning process took about two years, while the cataloging required even more time. Staff worked systematically to improve cataloging accuracy while resolving technical database challenges.
This project ensures that important information is now digitally accessible through the City Viewer, whereas previously secondary plans could only be obtained at the Reykjavík City Service Center and the Reykjavík Municipal Archives.
Project impact
With this initiative, Reykjavík City has taken a significant step forward in digital transformation and service improvement.
The public and professionals now benefit from enhanced service with round-the-clock access to documents. The increased transparency and improved accessibility also contribute to more efficient case processing while saving both time and resources. The Service Center now has additional capacity to handle other responsibilities.
Secondary plans can be viewed on the website through the City Viewer. The City Viewer connects to a drawing portal offering expanded search capabilities across Reykjavík City's entire drawing collection.
