"There's always anticipation and joy in the air when Bike to Work begins. It's particularly rewarding to kick off the campaign here at Reykjavík City Hall, as we strongly emphasize improving infrastructure for cyclists," said Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, mayor of Reykjavík City, who launched the Bike to Work health and motivation campaign on May 7, 2025.

The mayor launched the campaign for the 23rd time, joined by Sigrún Ágústsdóttir, director of the Nature Conservation Agency, María Ögn Guðmundsdóttir, Iceland's road cycling champion, and Andri Stefánsson, executive director of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland.

Reykjavík now has approximately 45 kilometers of dedicated biking paths, plus many more suitable cycling routes throughout the city. The number of biking paths will increase in coming years, focusing on neighborhood paths where appropriate and in coordination with the City Line transit project.

Successful cycling winter concluded

The growing number of cyclists is evident when examining winter cycling data, with significant increases in bicycle traffic between January and February of 2024 and 2025. In the capital area, the increase was 6.2% in January and 21.7% in February compared to last year. These statistics are available in the City Viewer.

  • All Reykjavík City primary schools now provide bicycle parking for at least 20% of their students and teachers.

Bike to Work

"I want to thank the National Olympic and Sports Association for this excellent initiative that Bike to Work represents. It's much more than just encouraging people to get outside and exercise – it's also environmentally friendly team building that creates a positive atmosphere in workplaces throughout the country. And there are always some people who subsequently decide to take the full plunge and join the year-round cycling community," said the mayor, adding that Reykjavík City is proud of the collaboration in this project!

Registration is available on the Bike to Work website, with the campaign running until May 27, often generating excellent camaraderie in workplaces around this initiative.
