One billion króna will be spent on paving this summer, with an additional 200 million króna allocated for asphalt repairs. The total estimated cost is approximately 1.2 billion króna. Work on milling and overlay paving is expected to begin in May and finish in September. Asphalt repairs are carried out year-round and alongside milling and overlay operations.

The City Executive Council authorized the Department of Environment & Planning to solicit bids for this year's asphalt paving projects during its meeting on Thursday, March 13.

5% of street network to be renewed this year

A memo from Efla engineering firm presented at the meeting details the current condition and estimated maintenance needs of Reykjavík streets. The memo states that the condition of Reykjavík City's street network has remained relatively stable in recent years and is in acceptable condition.

  • The proportion of streets in good condition (with more than five years of remaining lifespan) has remained comparable, at about 58-66% of the street network. The proportion of streets in poor condition, where the lifespan has expired, has been slowly improving in recent years, decreasing from 15% to 6% as of January, a historic low. However, nearly a third of the street network has only 1-5 years of remaining lifespan.
  • The estimated need for road surface renewal has also remained comparable for several years now, between 22-30 km annually, which is about 5-7% of Reykjavík City's total street network.
  • It's worth noting that street renewal for 2025 is expected to reach up to 1 billion króna, corresponding to nearly 21 km of the street network, or 5%.
