Major EU grant to improve water quality in Vatnsmýri and Tjörnin
Reykjavík City has received more than 150 million kr. in grants from the European Union's LIFE program to improve water quality in Vatnsmýri and Tjörnin.
The project's goal is to assess the area's chemical conditions and identify sources of pollution. Based on this information, steps will be planned to reduce pollution and prevent further contamination despite planned development in the area.
The City's grant is part of a 3.5 billion kr. grant the Environment Agency received from the LIFE program, designed to accelerate the implementation of the Water Management Plan in Iceland. The project is called LIFE ICEWATER and the grant is one of the largest an Icelandic project has received from the European Union. The grant will be distributed among 22 domestic parties over six years, creating opportunities for innovation in administration through cross-disciplinary collaboration aimed at improving water quality nationwide.
In total, Reykjavík City and the Section B – Autonomous Entities including Reykjavík Energy, Veitur Utilities and ON Power received about half a billion kr. in grants from LIFE-ICEWATER.
Tjörnin's watershed covers a large area.
