Preparations for the Children's Culture Festival 2024 are now in full swing, with the festival taking place April 23-28

The guiding principles of the Festival are quality, diversity, equality, and easy access to children's culture, with and for children. A diverse free program will be offered for the whole family during the festival.

The Children's Culture Festival 2024 theme is democracy, which is particularly fitting as Iceland celebrates its 80th anniversary as a republic this year. Iceland gained sovereignty in 1918 and became a republic on June 17, 1944.

Democracy is a significant element in children's culture, and it's important for children to learn democratic thinking like taking responsibility, being part of a community and respecting different opinions.

Reykjavík City Library has compiled a list of several good books that deal in one way or another with democracy and the challenges societies face when democracy is lacking.

The Children's Culture Festival is one of the Reykjavík's main participation events. The Festival takes place all over Reykjavík, with various events at primary schools, preschools, recreation centers, cultural institutions, art schools, and more. The Children's Culture Festival covers all art forms for children and their families.
