Hlemmur among development sites in 1.5 billion króna innovation project on safety and experience
Urban design The Bicycle City
Reykjavík City and its partners recently received a commitment for a four-year grant through the European Union's Horizon Europe framework program. The project, AMIGOS, focuses on improving the safety and experience of different types of travelers around transportation hubs. Changes around Hlemmur and the surrounding area in the coming years will be the main focus of Reykjavík's contribution to the project.
The total scope of AMIGOS is 1.5 billion króna, with Reykjavík City's grant share amounting to roughly 75 million króna. In total, 28 partners from 16 countries are participating to examine transportation hubs in 10 cities with improvements in mind. Partner cities include Hamburg, Istanbul, Bologna, Las Rozas, Lappeenranta, and Nazareth.
Innovative technology solutions and robust consultation
AMIGOS stands for "Active Mobility Innovations for Green and safe city sOlutionS." The primary goals and approaches involve developing safe, affordable, and sustainable solutions that leave no one behind, including older adults, disabled people, and young people. The project brings together innovative technical solutions, co-creation methods, and consultation approaches to evaluate simulations of how best to encourage active transportation, reduce vehicle traffic, and balance competing options fairly and safely.
The main objectives and implementation of AMIGOS will support the actions of the Green Deal regarding carbon neutrality, green transportation, 15-minute neighborhoods, and focus on public health, an inclusive community, democratic participation, digital journey, and user-centered services. It will also support the city's welfare and democratic policies by examining the area around Hlemmur regarding accessibility, safety, and public health impacts, with a deliberate emphasis on stakeholder participation in co-creation workshops.
International innovation and research collaboration
Reykjavík City has systematically worked for several years to increase participation in international innovation and development projects, with involvement from Horizon 2020 and now Horizon Europe. This participation enhances the City's knowledge of progressive ideas and solutions.
Noteworthy large-scale collaborative projects the City has participated in recent years include PaCE, SPARCS, and IMPULSE. The oversight and execution of these projects are managed by the Economic and Urban Development at the Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer, involving various specialized departments.
