City Council statement following Nursery Committee report

Reykjavík City Hall

The City Council apologizes to children who were placed at Hlíðarendi Nursery and Thorvaldsens Association Nursery and their families for the mistreatment described in the Nursery Committee report. It's clear that placement at these nurseries has in many cases had a profound impact on the children who were there. This is a dark chapter in Reykjavík City's history.

The City Council thanks the Nursery Committee for its exceptionally comprehensive, well-researched, and well-documented report. The City Council is also grateful to those who advocated for the investigation: Árni H. Kristjánsson, Fjölnir Geir Bragason, Hrafn Jökulsson, Tómas V. Albertsson and Viðar Eggertsson.

The City Council fully supports the Nursery Committee's recommendations presented in the report.

  • The first recommendation addresses potential compensation for those who were placed at the nurseries as children. These matters are under consideration by Alþingi.
  • The second recommendation addresses mental health and psychological services for the same individuals and is being handled by Reykjavík City.
  • The third focuses on current practices and oversight in the area of child protection and is being discussed in the Welfare Council and the child protection district council.
  • The fourth and final recommendation asks the City Executive Council to decide whether to continue examining nurseries in Reykjavík.

Follow-up on the recommendations has already begun.
