Food markets and temporary work permits

Food markets (many food stalls in a given location) and independent food stalls (which do not belong to the food market) require a work permit from the Municipal Health Department. Sales stalls belonging to the food market must, each, have a work permit from the health inspectorate. The Food Act prohibits the commencement of a licensed activity in the absence of a licence.

Food markets and food stalls operating outdoors in Reykjavik shall be licensed for use by the CoR's ministry of environment and logistics. If a use permit is obtained, operators (companies or individuals) must apply to the National Health Service for a temporary work permit. Temporary work permits may be valid for a maximum of three months. A work permit sets out the specific work permit conditions for the relevant market/sales booth/sales tent. The work permit is also accompanied by general work permit conditions.
