Electric vehicles

Reykjavík City, Reykjavík Energy, and Veitur Utilities reached an agreement in April 2019 for the extensive development of infrastructure in the city for electric car owners.

The projects

The project involves installing electric vehicle charging stations at 30 Reykjavík City facilities, with 20 additional stations per year for the next three years based on residents' suggestions. Reykjavík City and OR will create a fund to be allocated to homeowners' associations of multi-family residences that have installed EV charging equipment on their property.

Three aspects of the agreement

  • 30 chargers at Reykjavík City facilities
  • 60 chargers on city land throughout the city
  • 120 million ISK fund to support homeowners' associations of multi-family residences to install charging equipment

Firstly, infrastructure for EV charging stations will be developed at 30 predetermined locations at or near Reykjavík City facilities. These can be seen in the accompanying outline.

Additionally, at up to 60 other locations, piping to charging equipment will be installed on city land with the aim of serving residents who do not have parking on their own property. Residents' suggestions for locations have been requested. Reykjavík City and Veitur will choose the final locations in accordance with the number of residents and other efficiency considerations.

Finally, OR and Reykjavík City will each contribute 20 million ISK annually for three years to a fund that will grant subsidies to homeowners' associations of apartment buildings for the installation of EV charging equipment.

Status

Please note that all funds have been allocated and no decision has yet been made on continuation or additional funding for the fund.

Tender for charging equipment

The charging stations will be clearly marked and intended only for electric vehicles. Installation and operations of the charging equipment, which will be set up for the public, will be put out to tender. Charging will be sold at these parking spaces.

Reykjavík City provides the spaces, Veitur provides the home charging connections, and Reykjavík Energy contributes to the support fund. The maximum grant for a homeowners' association is envisioned to be 1.5 million Icelandic króna and to cover up to two-thirds of the cost of installing charging stations at a multi-family residence. The agreement includes a three-person collaborative committee of the contracting parties to oversee the project.

Development at Reykjavík City workplaces

The outline shows where charging equipment will be installed at 30 of the city's workplaces. Residents will influence the placement of up to 60 additional units throughout city land.
