Development fund

Preschools, primary schools, recreation centers, and school bands in Reykjavík are invited to apply for grants from the City's School and Recreation Council.

In 2026, grants will be awarded exclusively to Section B projects. The application deadline is March 1, 2026. Projects should be carried out during the 2026–2027 school year. The total grant allocation for 2026 is 50 million króna.

Grant eligibility criteria

To qualify for a grant, projects must be grounded in Reykjavík's Education Policy, "Let Our Dreams Come True," whose guiding principle emphasizes children's activity and participation, professionalism, and collaboration. The policy rests on five core elements: social skills, self-empowerment, literacy, creativity, and health. Development and innovation projects must connect to one or more of these elements and/or reflect the policy's overarching theme, guiding principle, and vision: Through robust school and recreation activities, children and young people gain education and experience to realize their dreams and have a positive impact on their environment and society. Projects should also align with the general action measures of Reykjavík's Education Policy for 2025–2027.

Section A

Grants are available to all primary schools, preschools, recreation centers, and school bands through a simple, transparent application process. Grant amounts are determined by a formula based on the number of annual full-time equivalent positions, the number of enrolled children, and the scope of operations. Note: No Section A grants will be awarded in 2026.

B-hluti

Larger collaborative projects requiring interdisciplinary cooperation between units—such as across school levels, recreation centers, school bands, or other schools or workplaces within or outside the neighborhood.
Each Section B project grant is expected to range from 4 million to 8 million króna.
