Informational meeting on the Sæbraut Highway Cap draws a strong turnout
Nearly 200 people attended yesterday's informational meeting on the Sæbraut Highway Cap at Vogaskóli. Reykjavík City, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, and Transport for the Capital Area organized the meeting.
Þorsteinn R. Hermannsson, executive director of Transport for the Capital Area and meeting chair, opened the meeting by walking attendees through the key points of the Transportation Charter.
For the rest of the program, Kristján Árni Kristjánsson, project manager at the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, presented a project overview; Þórhildur Guðmundsdóttir, an engineer at Verkís, shared the main findings of the environmental assessment; and architects Björn Guðbrandsson of Arkís arkitektar and Sigríður Magnúsdóttir of Tröð YouthWorks presented the proposed new land-use plan for the Sæbraut Highway Cap, along with proposed changes to the land-use plans for the Vogahverfi neighborhood and Vogabyggð 2.
The organizers provided ample time for questions and answers following the presentations, and after the formal program concluded, speakers and other planning and transportation experts stayed to chat informally with attendees. A recording of the meeting is available on Reykjavík City's YouTube channel.
As part of the capital area's Transportation Charter, the Sæbraut Highway Cap will span approximately one kilometer, running from the split-level interchange at Miklabraut north to the intersection of Kleppsmýrarvegur and Skeiðarvogur. The top of the highway cap will feature a new green neighborhood park linking the Vogahverfi and Vogabyggð districts.
The Sæbraut Highway Cap is designed to improve environmental quality, better connect surrounding neighborhoods, ease traffic flow along Sæbraut, and help clear the path for the CityLine. The structure is also intended to improve freight traffic flow to Sundahöfn port and is one of the prerequisites for the Sundabraut road project.
You can find additional data on the Urban Planning Portal. The public comment period runs through June 24, except for the environmental assessment report, which remains open for review through June 29.
