The Reykjavík Sports Association honored Reykjavík's top athletes and sports team at a ceremony in Reykjavík City Hall yesterday.

Olympic weightlifter Eygló Fanndal Sturludóttir is Reykjavík's Sportswoman of 2024. Handball player Benedikt Gunnar Óskarsson is Reykjavík's Sportsman of 2024. Valur's men's handball team is Reykjavík's Sports Team of 2024.

Eygló Fanndal Sturludóttir from Lyftingafélag Reykjavíkur (e. Reykjavík Weightlifting Club) is Reykjavík's Sportswoman of 2024

Eygló Fanndal became a triple European champion in the under-23 category, setting a new personal record. She also received an award as the highest-scoring female competitor at the tournament. She became the Nordic champion in the -71 kg senior category in total results, set four Nordic records, and was the highest-scoring female competitor at the tournament. Eygló set six Icelandic records this year in the senior category and six in the under-23 category. She became the Icelandic champion in the women's -71 kg category and came very close to securing a spot at the Olympics. Eygló has improved tremendously this year and participated in various international competitions with good results.

Benedikt Gunnar Óskarsson, handball player for Valur's men's team, is Reykjavík's Sportsman of 2024

Benedikt Gunnar played a major role in Valur's Cup and European Cup championship team this year. He scored 17 goals in the cup final against ÍBV in March, breaking a 22-year-old scoring record. Benedikt Gunnar was named the best player in the men's top division. Earlier this year, he signed with Norwegian champions Kolstad from Trondheim, where he plays in the European Champions League. In recent years, Benedikt Gunnar has been part of the men's national team.

Valur's men's handball team is Reykjavík's Sports Team of 2024

Valur had an excellent season and are the 2024 cup champions. The highlight of the season was Valur's impressive victory in the European Cup, where they defeated the strong Olympiacos team in the final. The result was determined by a penalty shootout on a difficult away game in Greece.
