A record in allocated housing plots

A record number of plots for new apartments was approved by the Reykjavik City Council in 2017. The vast majority was assigned to non-profit-making construction associations.

The City Council allocated plots for 1,711 apartments last year, out of which the vast majority or 1,422 apartments are for non-profit associations that build residences for students, the elderly and low-income individuals and families.

“In 2017, we saw a record-high allocation of plots and construction sites in Reykjavík,” says Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson. “In order to put these numbers into perspective and to grasp the dimension of these contracts, we can point out that the total numbers of apartments in the whole of neighbouring municipality of Seltjarnarnes was exactly 1,711 according to official statistics in 2016.”

“It is very important to start the construction of these 1,422 apartments that non-profit associations have plans for building as soon as possible. These projects are the most important component of the city's housing plan in order to provide affordable housing,” says Mayor Eggertsson.  “We will most certainly continue allocating land to these same contractors in 2018,” he adds.

The greatest allocations in 2017 were made to the Student Housing Community which has already started the construction of 244 apartments in the vicinity of the University of Iceland; the University of Reykjavík that will construct some 370 apartments on campus; Bjarg Housing Association, which is owned by the Icelandic labour unions which has planes for building some 236 apartments in Grafarvogur and Úlfarsárdalur; The Fishermen Committee that will build 144 apartments in Fossvogur, assigned for the elderly; Vesturbugt construction company that will build 176 apartments by the Old Harbour; and finally to the cooperative building association Búseti which plans to construct some 78 apartments in Keilugrandi.
