New Year's Eve bonfires at ten locations in Reykjavík

Only unpainted wood is loaded onto the bonfires according to the new rules that apply to what can be burned. New Year's Eve bonfires are always held in ten places in Reykjavík.

They are either managed by the city or an association. There is good control and monitoring of fires and they are extinguished in time in the evening.

Where will there be bonfires in Reykjavík?

New Year's bonfires will be lit on New Year's Eve.

  • At Ægisíða, a small bonfire, at 20:30.
  • In Skerjafjörður opposite Skildinganes 48-52, a small bonfire, is lit at 21:00.
  • At Suðurhliðar, below Fossvog Cemetery, a small bonfire, at 20:30.
  • Laugardalur, below Laugarásvegur 18, a small bonfire, at 20:30.
  • Geirsnef, on the north side of Geirsnef, a large bonfire, at 20:30.
  • At Jafnasel, a small bonfire, at 8:30 p.m.*
  • At Rauðavatn on the north side, a small bonfire, at 20:30.
  • Gufunes by Gufunesbær, a large bonfire, at 20:30.
  • At Kléberg in Kjalarnes, a small bonfire,  will be lit at 20:30.
  • Úlfarsfell at Fisfélag activity area above Lambhagavegur, a small bonfire (lit at 3:00 p.m.)

*The bonfire that has been at Suðurfell in the past, will be cancelled because there is now a construction site due to the construction of Arnarnesvegur. Instead, there will be a small bonfire at Jafnasel at 20:30 and the burning time will be one hour.

Weather forecast disclaimer

The mayor of Reykjavík confirms the issuance of burning permits, and before noon on New Year's Day, the weather forecast is checked and a decision is made as to whether it can be lit that evening.
