Erró, María Dalberg, Guðmunda S. Kristinsdóttir‘s Art Fund

The exhibition Erró: Black and White  will be opened on Saturday, 13 October at 15h00 in Reykjavík Art Museum, Hafnarhús. Another exhibition, Buzz, in Gallery-D Hafnarhús, will be opened on the same occation with the works of María Dalberg. On the same occation Erró will grant a female artist with an award from his aunt‘s art fund.

The exhibition Black and White has around thirty new and recent black and white paintings by Erró. The works, most of whom come straight from his studio in Paris, yet again testify of the artist’s creative energy and innovation. Here he mixes famous people from history with Manga and cartoon figures. The material is diverse and safe to say that it covers most of the artist’s interests, but Erró is known for his unbridled enthusiasm for most things between heaven and earth. Here he has created powerful pieces, inspired by the cartoon world, by art history, these paintings are brimming with sarcasm and humor towards social issues and human nature. Many people are familiar with Erró’s colorful paintings – but not many connect him to black and white artwork. During his long career, he has, however, now and again done black and white paintings, some of them enormous.

Reykjavík Art Museum has a large collection of Erró’s works which are exhibited regularly in Hafnarhús.

María Dalberg (b. 1983) is the 34th artist to exhibit in the D-Gallery series which started in 2007. María finished an M.A.-degree in Fine Art from Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2016. She has participated in over thirty exhibitions and film festivals in Europe and in America. She works with video installations, sound, photographs, drawings and text. Experiments with different textures in video and other media is central to her practice.

Erró established the art fund in memory of his aunt, Guðmunda S. Kristinsdóttir. It is intended to promote and support women's art. This is the 19th time the grant is awarded. Previous artists that have been granted the fund are Elín Hansdóttir, Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, Sirra Sigrún Sigurðardóttir, Ósk Vilhjálmsdóttir, Ólöf Nordal, Finna Birna Steinsson, Katrín Sigurðardóttir, Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, Sara Björnsdóttir, Þóra Þórisdóttir, Guðrún Vera Hjartardóttir, Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir, Hulda Stefánsdóttir, Margrét H. Blöndal, Sara Riel, Þórdís Aðalsteinsdóttir, Guðný Rós Ingimarsdóttir and Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir.
