Exciting Mobility Week ahead
A vintage bicycle exhibit, forum, group bike ride, free public transport and a new biking path. These are among the events during European Mobility Week, September 16-22. This year's theme is "Public Spaces - Active Mobility."
Since 2002, Icelandic municipalities have joined European cities in promoting sustainable transportation. The Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate oversees the week in Iceland.
The week aims to introduce urban residents to eco-friendly, economical, and health-promoting transport options that benefit the environment.
Reykjavík City actively participates in Mobility Week, collaborating with other municipalities and organizations. The City encourages residents to join in.
September 16: Opening and bicycle exhibit
- A bicycle exhibit by Reiðhjólabændur and Reykjavík City opens at 4pm in City Hall's Tjarnarsalur and will run throughout Mobility Week. It features nearly 40 bicycles. The exhibit showcases unique and interesting bicycles from various eras. This is the first exhibit of its kind held in Iceland. Photos of biking paths by Reykjavík City and the Road Administration will also be on display. Admission is free. Visitors are encouraged to arrive by bike or on foot. Bike parking is available at the building entrances and in the underground garage.
September 18: Resource tours, film screening, and conference
- Resource tours start at Elliðaárstöð at 5pm, led by Reykjavík Energy experts. Participants will cycle to learn about the capital area's resources and infrastructure. Rafstöðvarvegur 17.
- Reiðhjólabændur and Bíó Paradís screen the documentary "Chasing The Sun" about cycling's community impact and the Chase The Sun event at Elliðaárstöð.
- Leading the Charge (I. Aðförin í öndvegi). Elliðaárstöð. Reykjavík Energy and Veitur host a lunchtime conference at Elliðaárstöð's Bistro, focusing on pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Soup, bread, and coffee will be served.
September 19: New walking path and PubQuiz
- A new walking and biking path opens in Suðurhlíðar, a collaboration between Reykjavík City, the Road Administration, and Transport for the Capital Area.
- Transportation PubQuiz at SnorraBar with the Association for Car-Free Living (I. Samtök um bíllausan lífsstíl) at 11am.
September 20: Traffic Conference
- Traffic Conference – on the same team. The Icelandic Transport Authority holds the Traffic Conference from 9am to 3:30pm at Gamla Bíó, Ingólfsstræti 2a, Reykjavík. Theme: Different road user groups. Registration
September 21: Joint ride for Reykjavík and Seltjarnarnes residents
- Group bike ride. Reykjavík City and Seltjarnarnes offer a family bike ride. Meet at 11am at the new viewing platform by the JL House, Hringbraut 121, Reykjavík. We will bike the 6km Grótta circuit, followed by swimming, coffee, juice, and pastries. Facebook event
September 22: Car Free Day
- Car Free Day. Free rides on Strætó Public Transport in rural areas and the capital area.
- Garðsbraut in Húsavík closes to car traffic. Presentation on child safety in street design. Norðurþing.

- Hjólafærni (biking ability) offers bicycle certification for primary schools.
Reykjavík City prioritizes walkable routes to schools. Rimaskóli competes for the "Golden School" title in the "Walk to School" project by the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland and partners. .
