Work continues to improve bus stop accessibility in Reykjavík

Plans call for reconstruction og about 40 bus stops across Reykjavík in 2026, advancing its ongoing effort to build a more accessible, user-friendly transportation network.

This project builds on a major initiative launched in 2025, when the city redesigned 25 bus stops. The 2026 construction will complete the project's second and final phase.

The goal is to ensure bus stops are accessible to everyone, including physically disabled people, seniors, and parents with strollers. Key improvements include:

  • Bus stop resurfacing and repairs
  • Raised curbs where conditions allow
  • Tactile guidance and warning strips for blind and low-vision people
  • Better connections to sidewalks and paths
  • Crosswalk upgrades
  • Standardized placement of equipment, such as timetable posts and waste containers
  • Bus shelter replacements where needed

These upgrades aim to make waiting for the city bus safer and more comfortable for all service users. Bus shelters slated for upgrades in this phase are located in Vesturbær, Grafarholt, the city center, Laugarnesshverfi, Háaleiti and Bústaðir, Breiðholt, and Árbær, among other areas.
