Hólabrekkuskóli and the School of Education at the University of Iceland hosted a highly successful symposium this week at Gerðuberg on the Starling targeted vocabulary instruction method. The event sold out before Easter, drawing approximately 130 attendees and reflecting strong, growing interest in the approach.

Hólabrekkuskóli to lead implementation

Hólabrekkuskóli has piloted Starling—also known as the Starri targeted vocabulary method—across three grade levels this school year, yielding highly promising results. Preparations began last summer with visits to Nottingham, where local schools introduced the method. Educators then adapted the materials into Icelandic, and classroom instruction began in the fall.

Method creators Aaron Jordan and Dr. Emma Vardy presented at the event alongside counselor Amelia Jöra Larimer and Sólveig Edda Ingvarsdóttir, literacy project manager and Starri lead at Hólabrekkuskóli. The symposium garnered an enthusiastic response, and Hólabrekkuskóli has since been selected to lead the method's rollout in Iceland.
