Sampling from Tjörnin

Reykjavík Public Health staff have been working to collect water and sediment samples from Tjörnin as part of the LIFE-ICEWATER project.

The sampling aims to measure pollutants called priority substances in Tjörnin and analyze PFAS chemicals. The sampling is part of Tjörnin's monitoring plan, with results designed to show current conditions, identify pollution sources and find ways to improve the pond's chemical status.

Reykjavík City received more than 150 million króna last year from the European Union's LIFE program to improve water quality in Vatnsmýri and Tjörnin. This grant is part of a 3.5 billion króna award the Environment Agency received from the LIFE program to speed up and improve Water Management Plan implementation in Iceland.

The project's goal is to assess the area's chemical conditions and identify sources of pollution. Based on this information, steps will be planned to reduce pollution and prevent further contamination despite planned development in the area.
