Reykjavík City and the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities expand digital development cooperation

Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir and Jón Björn Hákonarson, chair of the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities, have signed a declaration expanding their digital development cooperation.

The agreement aims to align policy and action regarding digital solutions, improve services for residents, and leverage technology to increase efficiency and transparency in public administration.

Since 2020, the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities has served as the primary collaborative platform for municipalities working on digital development. The Association has played a central role in coordinating projects, sharing knowledge, and ensuring that municipalities across the country can utilize shared digital solutions to improve services and advance digital transformation. The focus now shifts toward deeper collaboration between municipalities and the national government to build innovation momentum, develop aligned solutions, improve cost-effectiveness, and deliver better services to residents nationwide.

Reykjavík City has actively participated in municipal digital development cooperation since its inception. The City has contributed staff resources and specialized expertise to the effort. Under the new declaration, Reykjavík City will also provide dedicated funding to further strengthen the partnership's foundation. This marks a milestone in the shared development of digital administration for municipalities nationwide.

Mayor Heiða Björg notes that pooling municipal efforts in digital development offers significant advantages. "It saves us both time and money and improves services for residents. We have made it a priority for Reykjavík to lead the way in putting digital solutions to work. It is therefore essential that the country's largest municipality lend its full weight to the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities."

Jón Björn Hákonarson, chair of the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities, echoed that view. "By deepening our cooperation, we are taking a vital step toward more focused and coordinated digital development across municipalities. Our partnership with Reykjavík City strengthens our shared foundation and enhances the capacity of municipalities across Iceland to deliver better, more efficient, and more cost-effective services to residents. It is genuinely gratifying to make that commitment official today."
