National Election Commission opens the period for collecting endorsements for 2026 municipal elections
The National Election Commission has opened the period for collecting endorsements for municipal election candidates. Voters can endorse one candidate list in their municipality.
The municipal elections will be held on May 16, and early voting begins April 17. The candidate registration deadline is noon on Friday, April 10.
Prospective candidates must collect endorsements from voters in their municipality to qualify for the ballot.
The required number of endorsements varies by population size. In Reykjavík, each candidate list needs between 160 and 320 endorsements.
You can only endorse one candidate list per election. However, people can withdraw their endorsement until the registration deadline passes or until the candidate list submits their registration documents.
Candidates have just over a month to collect endorsements before the registration deadline of April 10, the Friday after Easter.
