Hlemmur — an inviting urban space for people

Hlemmur3

Hlemmtorg (Hlemmur Square) plays a central role in improving access to the city center by public transportation and active travel. It will also become a green, welcoming space for people. The project emphasizes playgrounds, accessibility for all, greenery, and places to spend time.

An update on construction and design work at Hlemmur was presented to Reykjavík City's Department of Environment and Planning on Oct. 21.

Norðurpóll

Construction is nearing completion around Norðurpóll, the building that will be moved back to the square near its original site. The square in front of Norðurpóll will focus on easy access, compliance with accessibility requirements, and good outdoor dining facilities.

The play hall

The foundation is in place for the play hall, which will stand next to Norðurpóll. The steel structures for both the stage and the play hall are about to enter production, while the playground equipment is on its way to Iceland.

The play hall is sure to be popular with children. A fence between the play hall and Norðurpóll will help keep children safe while they play.

Bicycle parking facility

This lightweight, single-story bike station features two-tier bicycle parking and will be installed next to Gasstöðin on Rauðarárstígur. A market survey will be sent to potential operators.

West Hlemmur

The Hlemmur food hall will receive a fresh look and significantly improved waste collection facilities, along with luggage storage for tourists. Buildings will be easily accessible, and seating and greenery will help shape the area's character. The clock tower that once stood by the Hlemmur bus stop will be reinstalled, and Klyfjahesturinn has already been moved to a better location.

The square will also include a structure for Veitur Utilities and Reykjavík City, housing control systems for piping and snow melting. It will have a polished steel finish.

Construction in northern Hlemmur

Construction by the City, Transport for the Capital Area and Veitur Utilities is expected to begin soon; see the news article here and the presentation on Hlemmtorg:
