Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir and Íþaka Real Estate signed an agreement today to extend the lease and expand Fylkisselið by 567 square meters, with Fylkir's chair attending the ceremony.

Located at Norðlingabraut 12, the facility serves as the gymnastics and karate training hub for the Fylkir sports club. This expansion supports a popular local sport while helping increase both the variety of disciplines and the number of participants in youth athletics.

In 2020, Reykjavík adopted a sports policy that runs through 2030. That framework established criteria to guide how the city prioritizes its sports investments and construction. Using those guidelines, officials developed a prioritized list for sports facility development through extensive consultation with local clubs, ranking projects by financial and social impact. Expanding Fylkir's gymnastics facility took the top spot on that list.

The City Council majority's coalition agreement on quality of life in Reykjavík emphasized directing construction funding and resources toward sports facilities for children and young people, as well as closing the access gap for all genders and LGBT+ people. The goal is to improve access to sports, culture, and participation in a wide range of activities, specifically focusing on children in vulnerable situations. Expanding Fylkir's sports facility directly reflects that objective.

"Expanding Fylkisselið strengthens a thriving sports community in Árbær, creates more space for participants, and ensures more people have the opportunity to flourish through movement, fellowship, and joy. In my view, this is exactly the kind of prioritization Reykjavík should champion. Reaching this crucial milestone is fantastic," said Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir.
