Confidence and diversity in Breiðholt Got Talent

From the talent competition Breiðholt Got Talent

Excitement and joy filled the air when Miðberg after-school program and youth center held their annual talent competition Breiðholt Got Talent 2026. The auditorium filled with laughter, applause and anticipation as young competitors took the stage, bold and creative, showcasing their talents on a day many had eagerly awaited.

A platform to let their light shine

The event has been an integral part of after-school and youth center activities in Breiðholt since 2009. Over these 17 years, it has weathered staff changes, a pandemic and social changes but survived because it creates opportunities that are otherwise hard to find. This was highlighted in a recent Vísir article by Sigrún Ósk Arnardóttir and Valgeir Þór Jakobsson, who work at an after-school program and youth center within Miðberg. The competition gives children and teenagers a platform to take risks, try new things, laugh, shine and learn. Participation gives children an opportunity to be seen and recognized by their peers, as Sigrún and Valgeir point out.

Outstanding performance in the after-school program competition

Preparations for the competition took place across Breiðholt in the weeks leading up to it, as the after-school programs Álfheimar, Bakkasel, Hraunheimar, Regnboginn, Vinafell, Vinaheimar and Vinasel practiced their acts with great ambition. Each center chose two representatives who then took the stage in the main competition.

The acts were diverse and well-rehearsed, generating both joy and admiration. The judges had a difficult task ahead of them, but in the end, the winners were:

Jökull Freyr, Þorbergur Maron, Atlas Þór and Elmar Árni from Regnboginn. The boys won the hearts of the audience with a powerful and well-executed act.
The day's host, Hafsteinn Vilhelmsson, kept the energy high and ensured the hall stayed lively throughout.

The youth competition — a testament to diversity and creativity

The evening belonged to the teenagers, when the youth centers Bakkinn, Hólmasel, Hellirinn and Hundrað&ellefu presented ten fantastic acts. Breiðholt is a community full of cultural and social diversity that was well showcased on stage. The program included ballet, hip hop, folk music, original lyrics and bold acts that touched the hearts of the audience.

The suspense was intense when the judges announced the evening's winners: Nonnie and Abdiraman from Hundrað&ellefu, who captivated everyone present. Erla and Jasmín from Bakkinn hosted the evening with great professionalism.

Important opportunities and experience

As Sigrún and Valgeir discuss in their article, the competition is built on the vital work of recreation professionals who are passionate about nurturing children and teenagers and supporting them in finding their inner selves. "Taking the stage requires courage, whether it's singing, performing magic tricks, playing an instrument or telling jokes. It builds confidence to overcome the butterflies in your stomach and earn applause from your peers." For many, this could even be the step toward arts education or a music career.

The future is bright

The Miðberg Recreation Center and the City of Reykjavík are incredibly proud of all the children and teenagers who participated. They showed not only talent but also courage, joy, respect and solidarity. Breiðholt Got Talent 2026 is a community celebration, reaffirming that Breiðholt's future is bright.
