CityLine construction begins at Nauthólsvegur – Reykjavík University

This project, part of CityLine's first phase, redesigns the street cross-sections of Nauthólsvegur, Menntavegur, and Menntasveigur alongside their intersections and connecting roadways. Transport for the Capital Area is executing the project in partnership with Reykjavík City and Veitur Utilities, anticipating a July 2028 completion. The area will remain open to all traffic throughout construction, utilizing established detour routes.

Grafa og Grjót and Malbikunarstöðin Höfði secured the contract after submitting the lowest bid of 2.27 billion ISK, including VAT. This figure comes in well under the project's estimated cost of 2.9 billion ISK.

"With this construction at Nauthólsvegur, we are strengthening public transportation connections between Fossvogsbrú and Vatnsmýrin with a new dedicated transit lane. Simultaneously, we will significantly improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists while maintaining one vehicle lane in each direction. The project also gives Veitur Utilities an opportunity to replace its piping," said Atli Björn Levy, director of the CityLine Project Management Office.

Updates include widening the Nauthólsvegur cross-section and installing a dedicated public transportation lane down the center of the street, separated from the general traffic lanes, which will retain their 1+1 configuration. The scope also covers building a CityLine station at HR, creating new entrances for HR and the Icelandic Coast Guard, and replacing the existing roundabout with a signalized intersection.

Accessibility maintained during construction

Detour routes will ensure continued access for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and public transportation throughout the construction period. As is currently the case, one vehicle lane will remain open in each direction. Pathl connections to Öskuhlíð will remain intact, and Strætó Public Transport stops will continue operating, though crews may relocate them as work progresses. Crews will keep parking disruptions to a minimum.

Connection to Fossvogsbrú Bridge

This Nauthólsvegur and HR construction directly follows the Fossvogsbrú project, currently underway and expected to open in summer 2028. The 270-meter bridge will forge a new connection between the southern part of the capital area and the city center. Like the work at Nauthólsvegur and Reykjavík University, the bridge falls under CityLine's first phase. The bridge accommodates public transportation, pedestrians, and cyclists, while granting priority access to police, ambulances, and fire services.
