Candidate filing deadline for the 2026 city council elections
The candidate filing deadline for the May 16, 2026, city council elections is noon on Friday, April 10.
The Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission will accept party lists in the City Executive Council meeting room at Reykjavík City Hall from 11 a.m. to noon on both Wednesday, April 8, and Friday, April 10.
Every party list must feature between 23 and 46 candidates. A written declaration confirming consent must accompany every candidate on the party list, featuring either a physical or valid electronic signature.
Each party list must also include written declarations of support from voters in the constituency, physically signed on sequentially numbered forms.
Every endorsement must provide the supporter's full name, ID number, and legal residence. Support rosters require a minimum of 160 and a maximum of 320 endorsers. Individuals may only endorse a single party list. Candidates cannot endorse their own rosters, while members of the Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission or the National Electoral Commission are prohibited from endorsing any party list.
All nominations must clearly state each candidate's full name, ID number, job title, and legal residence. Each candidate's name on a party list must feature at least one given name and a surname, matching their entry in Registers Iceland exactly. Organizations should also submit party lists electronically and register endorsement rosters online at Island.is.
Finally, every party list needs a notice from the submitting political organization designating two authorized representatives and providing their contact information.
Hand-signed nomination notices and candidate declarations must be delivered to the constituency electoral commission as original documents, while those with valid electronic signatures should be emailed as attachments to kosningar@reykjavik.is. Whenever possible, consolidate multiple electronic signatures into a single document.
Paper-based voter declarations of support for party lists must reach the constituency electoral commission as hand-signed originals.

The Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission will base its operations at Reykjavík City Hall on election day, Saturday, May 16. After the polling session closes, the constituency electoral commission will relocate to the ÍR gymnasium at Skógarsel 12 for vote counting. The vote counting is open to the public as space allows and will be streamed on the Reykjavík City website.
